This new film looks fine (about the average okay quality from your standard oversanitized modern kids flik) but it can’t replicate the absurd comedy gold of the 2003 version.

I'm not even a big CITH fan, but part of what made the original book so cool was how you didn't know shit about the cat. There was no backstory or world tied to him, He was just some random creature that let sad kids have some fun, while also learning when too much fun was too much. That's it. Putting him in a imaginary creature world where he's trying to prove himself or some gay shit like that doesn't work for this character at all. They turned him from mischievous yet kind hearted entity into flint lockwood

Wanted to like this when I first saw what it was, but it was ruined by how bad the jokes and the ideas for expansion on the story are in this. Most of the jokes feel more like off-brand Looney Tunes than Seuss, kind of fitting for modern WB, and the Cat in the original wasn't a renegade within a larger org, he was a total enigma, disrupting a boring status quo the kids were part of. Not everything benefits from peeking behind the curtain and removing mystery.

I don't hate the artstyle here but Dr. Seuss really had a unique style to his work that i dont see like any of the cgi adaptations really get down.
Best way i can describe it is a sort of charming ugliness, characters have wrinkles on their faces, the hatching on most surfaces makes everything look scratchy, theres a certain way cloths are drawn that makes everything look like a sock that just doesn't fit right.
ealizing this im kinda bummed that this doesn't even feel like it takes those things into account or builds upon them in any specific way. Characters just kinda look like they came from a DreamWorks movie and don't really feel like Dr Seuss to me (The eyes really give it off).

Honestly, the makeup for the Jim Carrey Grinch movie might be the closest we got to the vibe of Dr Seuss's art

and DESU this tracks with a lot of modern animation, there seems to be this trend of a lot of modern animation having a clean, cute and soft-on-the-eyes aesthetic, on top of trying to emulate the look of 2D with cel shading and rendering and whatnot, and thats fine for most stuff, but you rarely see mainstream examples of the opposite aesthetic.

its crazy because during that initial boom in the 2000s of family animated features you saw a lot more variation in aesthetic and how things were rendered and i daresay the limitations and lack of a "standard" gave every movie a unique feel.
Now things feel like they've all consolidated, same warm, soft lighting, same dense "realistic" detail, same floundering attempts to build on an original style, if there is any. its the standard now, as if the previous variety was just failed experiments in search of it.

Even the character designs fall victim to this, you'll notice how with each movie in the HTTYD franchise, Toothless's eyes got bigger and cuter, and how in the original Despicable Me, not only was the lighting much harsher and sharper (compare Counter Strike Source to CS2 for another example of this), but both Gru and his minions had more angular, slightly jagged teeth, with deeper shadows between each tooth, giving it a slightly creepy vibe, whereas in every subsequent movie, the minions teeth got rounded off like a beanmouth cartoon network character

Here's my idea
>what if Michael Bay directed a Dr. Seuss movie
>Michael Bay's There's a Wocket in My Pocket!
>Mark Wahlberg plays a swole gigachad who works at the CIA
>his wife played by Hayley Atwell cheats on him in favor of Idris Elba's character who also works at the CIA and is Wahlberg's best friend
>both Idris and Wahlberg are aware of these alien creatures that will take over the universe known as the Wockets that will invade in the pockets of people's clothing
>However, the Pentagon deem the Wockets and their other alien creatures as good people that also happen to be Transformers that will destroy the robotic animal terrorists
>Wockets team up with Yots that transform from Pots, a Zable that transform from cloth tables, Yeps that transform from steps, a Zillow that transforms from Wahlberg's ex-girlfriend's pillow, etc., you get the idea
>they transform from Wahlberg's home appliances to destroy the robotic terrorist group known as the Z.A.X
>a confusing montage of robots fighting each other plays while Linkin Park music plays in the background, plus there are moments of explosions and pretty looking white women with big boobs, thighs and asses running in the background
>in the final moments of the climax, only one Wocket shoots one Z.A.X in a huge standoff, and he mutters, "Remember, bitches get Sneetches," and he shoots the Z.A.X bot
>Wahlberg is seen dead and we cut to the funeral home, but Wahlberg is actually alive!?!
>Elba, Atwell and the Wocket creatures welcome him back, but Wahlberg leaves to start anew
>cuts to the final shot of the Wocket creature and the destruction of the city as the song "What I've Done" by Linkin Park plays

>Animated special = timeless classic
I'd say the animated adaptations for Grinch and Cat in the Hat under the direction of Chuck Jones were too cute and cheerful.
Cat in the Hat 70s adaptation was too educational.
Jim Carrey one will always unironically be the better one, I don't get the hate for that one.
The animated Lorax and Horton specials from the 70s also were more faithful.
Illuminations Lorax I'm starting to think is an ironic classic, and Hortons was the best and faithful one.

2nd season didn't need the whole agent thing, it felt so forced and yet his dad not being the other agent really was a wasted opportunity to make something funny about it like the mom is mad at him because she can't resist to feel something for him and that's what led her to get pregnant

I feel like Chuck jones in general got a little too cutsey later on, which isn't bad in itself (I love cute shit) but it doesn't exactly fit with the Grinch, or at least the off beat weird vibe in the book isn't exactly captured. Still very nice watches. The Jim Carrey one just feels like a completely different thing, but I still really like it.

Nah, I'm good. I don't like interpretations of 8/16-bit sprites from indie games. The devs should have done the heavy lifting and hired artists for the games to give us a better idea of what the characters looks like, not the fans.

I liked the Minecraft movie as a stupid corporate shitheap, but that's the irony-rotted apathetic part of my brain that enjoys it. Mike Myers Cat in the Hat is far and away my favorite corporate shitheap movie though. It can't be surpassed.
