I know it's a squidmar video but this was when I first got started painting minis around 5 years ago. This video really helped me understand layering paints, especially with skin tones, to simulate depth.

I pretty much use what he does with the skin here on every part of my model and have just refined it to my style. It obviously works a lot better with highly detailed new sculpts but it works well on old stuff, just harder to find the curves of the muscle since they aren't all sculpted.
This is a model I painted immediately after watching that video, as you can see I still hadn't really learned to thin my paints, that red loincloth is MUCKY. lol
