Thanks anon!
For the hull, I did some oil filters/streaking by dotting a darker umbra at bottom, mixing with a beige tone near the middle and white at the top then just brushing downwards all around it with a large flat brush and some white spirit. Then I used some pigment powders where dust would accumulate around crew hatches.
For the wheel houses I painted them with a sandy acrylic and then added some mud texture paint along the edges and finally streaked some different earthy pigment powders on top.
For tracks I used a lot of sandy pigment almost as a wash then brushed it off when it dried and then added darker pigment towards the top of suspension and towards the back of the track where more fresh mud would accumulate.

It was basically a marine backpack with say, a base colour, a medium highlight and a lighter one, plus maybe or maybe not a wash, I dont remember.
Basically, their base eavy metal recipe.

I kinda wanted to give it a look because it showcased how the colours looked next to each other, and unlike box art it offered more variations ex black armour had more variants than the usual blue highlighted one it's usually shown on box art.

the trick to painting white (if you're not using a pure white undercoat) is for as little of it as possible to be actually white. you can get away with a lot of light grey (which are always easier to paint with) if the rest of the model is dark and/or bold colours.like yours. it just needs to be lighter than the highlight on the robe and a different hue.

a wash to smooth out the edges and add some definition could help a lot. apply all over then clean the flat areas with a wet brush to keep them brighter.

Ignore that guy. If you wanna work without washes, that's perfectly fine. Successive layers of lighter toned drybrushes on smaller areas will achieve a good looking effect but you do have to commit to blending your paints and being on top of making sure each successive blend is lighter.

If you work quickly enough this is easy enough to achieve by simply adding one drop of a lighter tone to your current paint mix.

Because inks are considered pretty old-school, while also being harder to control than Contrasts or washes. They're definitely worth the work in my opinion, I often mix a little white ink in with white paints to make it flow and bring up the color a little. I know it's a squidmar video but this was when I first got started painting minis around 5 years ago. This video really helped me understand layering paints, especially with skin tones, to simulate depth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49tJMKDDmZU

I pretty much use what he does with the skin here on every part of my model and have just refined it to my style. It obviously works a lot better with highly detailed new sculpts but it works well on old stuff, just harder to find the curves of the muscle since they aren't all sculpted.

This is a model I painted immediately after watching that video, as you can see I still hadn't really learned to thin my paints, that red loincloth is MUCKY. lol

How often should I be having to refill my brush with paint? It feels like I can hardly paint a whole marine leg without running out of paint on the brush. Even though I've painted a fair bit over a few years, I still find myself struggling with the basics like this and thinning to the correct consistency. It makes base coating a nightmare and slows me down immensely since I'm having to paint 3-4 coats of most paints instead of just 2.

depends a lot on the brush and the paint you are using, bigger and better brushes carry more paint and release it more consistently without flooding, heat/humidity also plays a part

> I'm having to paint 3-4 coats of most paints instead of just 2.
if you fell for the meme of priming black thats expected, very few colors will cover easily over that

As often as is needed.

>It feels like I can hardly paint a whole marine leg without running out of paint on the brush
If they paint doesn't last, try a bigger brush. Higher quality brushes usually give you the tip of a smaller, cheaper brush but more body (called barrel) to carry paint.

>since I'm having to paint 3-4 coats of most paints instead of just 2.
Some paints cover better than others. Some paints have a harder time covering over this or that colour. So the idea that you somehow always need this specific number of coats... nah. "Two thin coats" might be fine as a meme to get little Timmy to not just slob on one really thick coat all the time, but that's about as far as you should take it.

Right now I'm actually priming red for Blood Angels and after 2 coats I can still see the slightly darker red of the primer through the Mephiston Red I'm using as a base.
>>96183883
I think I'm just not thinning properly and it's getting dry on the brush faster than it should. I'm putting the paint on my wet palette, wetting my brush, taking most of the water out, then drawing paint out from the main portion. I haven't been adding water directly to the main body of the paint.
Or maybe it's a problem with how I'm loading it now that I think of it. Or both.

Anonymous No.96184149 [Report] >>96186793 >>96187025
Why is it that in so many videos I see involving a wet palette, the paint behaves way differently than on mine? The paint here is pulling back in on itself after it's spread out with the brush. On mine, the paint just sits exactly where I put it. I'm guessing it's a property of the paper they're using, but I have no idea what the difference is. It almost looks like what I'd expect if the paper were waxed.
Anonymous No.96184166 [Report]
>>96184112
While true, it's mostly on the flat, upward facing surfaces. So not terribly helpful for shadows. Plus I tend to miss at least some spots during priming so I try to get the whole model fully opaque with my base color before doing anything else.

i think it's more the life cycle of these channels moving from being initially helpful and informative to being more low effort content about the host themself and their "hobby journey" for easy views once established. The desperate algorithm chasing in general is also..well youtube ain't what it was to be but there are also only so many videos on the same shit that can be made beyond just actual painting models, (which the bigger channels apparently can't be bothered to do anymore) which once you know how to do that as a viewer, it becomes pretty redundant anyway.

hard to diagnose without looking at what you are doing, but the common checklist would be
>cleaning model before priming to get mold release off it
>clean airbrush to get any kind of lubricant or whatever could be in there out
>carefully read instructions and check if you are using a thinner or something that might not work with your paint
Cracks like that can happen if the paint doesn't stick to the surface below properly or it is shrinking so much that it cracks apart.

>>96185020
I'm not an expert when it comes to that but that should just make the paint dry slower. I'd expect low humidity would be more likely to cause excessive shrinking in the paint due to faster drying times.

its baking paper/parchment paper so silicone coated. desu it was the only type I ever used until I got some re-usable membranes. I think I prefer the latter type after using both as the paint does indeed behave more like an actual palette so it's a bit more coherent for mixing gradients but there are some advantages to having the water bead up, and it's a little easier to evaluate just how thinned something is by looking.
