I recently finished some genestealers, converted from the old kit.
This project might have gotten out of hand at this point.
>Wherever I touch a mini to move it on the battle field the paint disappears over time, despite it drying months, if not years ago
This is so frustrating. It looks ugly and I spent countless hours painting my army.
>>96168019Thicken your paints.
>>96168019Bruh if you're actually playing with your minis you need to varnish them
>>96168019layer of gloss, layer of matt over the top. reapply matt whenever you see shiny areas.
>>96168093>>96168110Do I have to take proper "miniature varnish" or can I just grab this big fuck-off can of home furniture varnish for a buck-fifty
>>96168131Use whatever you like. It's all the same stuff.
Is there a Vallejo/AP/other equivalent to martian ironearth?
>>96168019>curse of the contrast paintplastic fixed the chipping problem of metal models but now it came back with a vengeance
>>96168241>contrast paints I'm salty to this day I fell for this meme and actually tried to make them work as basecoats
>>96168241why do youse not just varnish bruz
>>96167732Cool rats ! Just matt varnishing clothes, wood and base would improve the rendering by 50% I think.
>>96168110>layer of gloss, layer of matt over the topWhat's the point of starting with gloss?
>>96168241What are you even talking about?
>>96168308i always cake my models with thick spray varnish but the point is contrast paints are the current default go-to painting method that is beign pushed right now
telling customers you need to varnish this shit might be bad for business so everyone has to figure it out themselves
>>96168345Gloss is actually sturdy, matte is not.
>>96168393This is news to me. Damn.
Close to the finish now, weathering is done unless I decide to do some rust around chips. On to details that I've skipped.
>>96168326Yes the varnishing is all over the place because I botched the rattlecan varnish and had to go over a lot of parts with Agrax. I'll also add some rust here and there and then varnish with a brush.
>>96168345Read the entire post, not just the first sentence.
Last time you'll see this, I promise. Just finished up the left over space on the base. Painted some ice and covered it with resin. Scratched it up a bit and then put some snow on top.
>>96168881>Last time you'll see this, I promise.I don't think anyone here minds, this thread is posting wips after all. Looking good btw, my complaint earlier was the the crystals felt not entirely integrated with the base and now it's fixed. Nice job.
>>96168987Thanks, yeah a bit of height on the base goes a long way. The snow powder blends into the plastic snow on the model surprisingly well.
>>96168881looked nice before, looks even nicer now, well done.
>>96168881Dude, I was once posting bellies of plastic girls models from Bandai and Kotobukiya for advice and nobody complained. It's "work in progress" thread after all and literally best place on this side of internet to discuss painting techniques of miniatures and models.
>>96168881Keep posting stuff, it's fine, it's a slow thread anyway.
This
>>96169275I will also be posting pictures of 75mm goblin girls in the near future.
>>96169275>bellies of plastic girls models from Bandai and KotobukiyaOh I remember those, I need to get one for myself at some point
>>96169275>literally best place on this side of internet to discuss painting techniques of miniatures and models. It's ridiculous how true this is. It seems like the only better option is to pay for 1-on-1 advice from professional mini painters or to literally just be irl friends with the in-group of GD winners.
>>96168393gloss being sturdier is a meme
Here is finished test dreadnought piece. Maybe a little much on the shell impacts but I'll be more selective on the other armor plates so it doesn't look like a cheese grater
>>96169867Oh I didn't realize before posting how washed out the front panel was you can't even see the impacts craters. Oh well, you get the idea.
>>96169867great work anon
for comparison here are some basic drilled impact holes i made some time ago
>>96168450great job, anon! how did you do the weathering?
>>96170002Thanks anon!
For the hull, I did some oil filters/streaking by dotting a darker umbra at bottom, mixing with a beige tone near the middle and white at the top then just brushing downwards all around it with a large flat brush and some white spirit. Then I used some pigment powders where dust would accumulate around crew hatches.
For the wheel houses I painted them with a sandy acrylic and then added some mud texture paint along the edges and finally streaked some different earthy pigment powders on top.
For tracks I used a lot of sandy pigment almost as a wash then brushed it off when it dried and then added darker pigment towards the top of suspension and towards the back of the track where more fresh mud would accumulate.
Some retro-ish Flawless Blades I painted.

I assumed spraying it as a liquid into the air was more acutely bad than just the fumes from the paint or thinner on a palette.
>>96171153Not dutch, dood.
>>96171163It probably is measurably worse and I imagine would give headaches quicker. Although idk. Ventilation is always a good idea with that shit

>>96172795>>96172770It was basically a marine backpack with say, a base colour, a medium highlight and a lighter one, plus maybe or maybe not a wash, I dont remember.
Basically, their base eavy metal recipe.
I kinda wanted to give it a look because it showcased how the colours looked next to each other, and unlike box art it offered more variations ex black armour had more variants than the usual blue highlighted one it's usually shown on box art.

Blade guard shields⦠fuck my life. They suck. Not sure what else I can do to correct the white on the shield.
>>96174622the trick to painting white (if you're not using a pure white undercoat) is for as little of it as possible to be actually white. you can get away with a lot of light grey (which are always easier to paint with) if the rest of the model is dark and/or bold colours.like yours. it just needs to be lighter than the highlight on the robe and a different hue.
a wash to smooth out the edges and add some definition could help a lot. apply all over then clean the flat areas with a wet brush to keep them brighter.
>>96172804there is one too many leaves on that base. pull that one off and it's fine.
>>96174692Would you recommend a wash to use?
>>96174622A lesson we must all learn is to not paint white over black. It's a hard lesson. If you're ever going to paint white on your model, prime those parts separately as white. Also throw your GW whites in the bin if you're using them. They're just no good.

Is there a way to reduce fitment issues when gluing resin parts together? The added material from the glue means parts never really fit quite flush.

>>96167010 (OP)I'm sick of using washes as a crutch, would drybrushing lighter shades of tan on pic related's uniform give me a nice looking blend?
>>96174706i use army painter's dark tone as my all-purpose. apply, wipe away from the areas I want clean, then reapply some thin highlights after if things went oo dark. >>96170863Valar Morghulis
>>96174840If you want fairly smooth and good looking blends you should try learning layering and/or glazing
>>96174840Drybrushing is the opposite of a nice blend you FOOL!
I would start with a base colour, a darker wash and a layered highlight. You can do it anon, it will look leagues better.
>>96174716Bt anon told me corax white is good
>>96174904thinned with white ink, that's the important part
>>96174916I never bothered with inks but I hear them mentioned now and then although you almost never see them used on yt guides etc, whats their deal? why arent they more common?
>>96174792put glue on a toothpick and apply it with it
>>96174840>>96174888Ignore that guy. If you wanna work without washes, that's perfectly fine. Successive layers of lighter toned drybrushes on smaller areas will achieve a good looking effect but you do have to commit to blending your paints and being on top of making sure each successive blend is lighter.
If you work quickly enough this is easy enough to achieve by simply adding one drop of a lighter tone to your current paint mix.
>>96174792First check by dry fitting if it isn't actually the parts themselves that don't fit together perfectly, because resin bits being that fucking precise would be a an outright bloody miracle.
Now if it is, use less glue, and switch to the thinnest CA glue you can find if you haven't already.
>>96174622The trick to painting white is to not actually paint white, because in reality there are not many things in nature that are solidly white. Take my terminators here. No true white on them, just light shades of grey.
>>96175009It's also good to lean more into blue-ish greys to make the "white" more interesting
>>96175018Yup, the grooves on the terminator helmets I pinwashed with nuln oil then did a slightly larger area with a dark blue wash.
>>96175009What brings a man to paint ultramarines?
>>96175009that's still quite chalky though
>>96175038blue is a nice colour
>>96175041But there's just too much of it. It always looks so flat and boring. I'm sure there's some cool Ultramarine successor chapters that have some cool colour schemes that incorporate it.
>>96174792>>96174998btw if you're gonna file resin so pieces fit together perfectly you're gonna need a proper mask.
>>96175058it's best to do it with the piece submerged in water
>>96174530I'm lazy so I just mimicked a camopedia swatch close as I could then doused them with some marine juice (basically thinned brown wash with a little purple ink added, you can find recipes on youtube). The trousers are vallejo field grey over a dark camo green base, mix in some yellow for highlights then glaze it back down with the field grey.
>>96175038Courage, and honor.
Honestly though, lore wise they are a really cool chapter. In game they have really cool characters.
Also, blue just looks good and is fun to paint.

>>96177784They are a bit slim next to Perry models, but I think they look about right scale wise, especially from a distance
>>96177743I did that last year but it turns out the private plane and crew that I booked were a front for the white slave trade, so I was flown to Dubai and was violated for months by Arab Oil Barons before Jason Statham and a crew of super mercenaries rescued me from the licentious hands of the Arabs. Even since then I've resolved to fly Southwest only. I also keep a needle in my asshole, just in case.
So, miniature cases?
>>96177812I'm sorry you had that experience. I can't say that's ever happened to me.
Yeah, miniature cases are also an option. I would probably carry-on if the size made sense, otherwise I would pack a case inside of a larger suitcase and use the clothes inside to pad the case.
>>96177829Yeah the plan is to just stuff it into my carry-on with my clothes and such. The pistol case I have will absolutely fit in the carry-on but like I said, the concern is that one of the TSA monkeys will flag it for review and I don't like the idea of having my delicate miniatures fondled by the bottom tier of PG County citizens that are employed at BWI. I figure a more non-descript case would lessen the odds of that happening.

>>96178075Love this stuff
>>96178075the cheapest one per weight at the supermarket
>>96178075CA glue is a commodity good, so just buy whatever brand. There are gel types, and I prefer that because they stay put and fill gaps better than the runny stuff. Sometimes I buy gorilla glue gel and sometimes I buy bulk packs of little tubes that some people seem to like because the glue dries out before finishing it most of the time anyway so buying small individual ones is better than buying a big one.
>>96177859100% the TSA will open that case and if they're inside, they'll inevitably break them when they slam the case back shut. There's so many horror stories of people who fly with funs getting their shit ruined by the TSA, ranging from 'they left my case unlocked' to 'someone stole my gun'.
>>96178075I prefer relatively small packages, tiny ones for miniatures and small ones for terrain, I tried big packs and it mostly ended up with 80% it drying in the bottle. Maybe getting one big pack can be meaningful if you're working on a big project where you're going to need lots of superglue?
>>96178075I once followed someone advice from here about buying one with small brush inside and store it in the fridge when not using and it worked like a charm.

>Oooh, I recognize this painting style, or the mark on your cutting matt. I've just sent a swat team to your house. No thank you.
>>96178989You might be a bit too paranoid anon
>>96178922hes not the one that brought 40k up, brainlet
>>96179019I think I've posted models twice in 40kg and both times somebody posted my normal username. No thank you. Not the end of the world, but it's annoying and I don't like it.

Painted this Trooper. 2nd model I've ever done, there are a few slip ups but what's your thoughts on the color scheme? Critiques desired

How come my pro-acryl paints say 'made in Canada' on them?

>>96086125Was just going to post this in the terrain thread but oh well.
Did up a second one of these in stone along with some XPS foam scatter terrain rocks. The scatter terrain I want to give an underlying base of clear plastic sheet, give it an extra lip around the edge and then glue static grass on, for blending into other terrains. Plus probably a bit of moss/other misc foliage on the larger rocks.

Test model for my heresy army that I worked on today.
Here's a Battlemasters Ogre I painted up to be used as an Ogre Lord in Heroquest. Against the Ogre Hoard ogres in the background.
>>96180205Fingerlicking so good. You have a grasp of light that I wish I had.
>>96180205that bellygem is lovely
>>96180124that bluey purple is weirdly enchanting. Idk if i've ever seen a paint straight from the pot like that.
>Stupid question I need to ask here.
Will an 0.5mm airbrush needle from another manufacturer be safe to use in really any different airbrush if all the parts are set up for 0.5mm airbrushing?
I bought a Chinesium airbrush and they have 0.5mm airbrush needles for different airbrush series, and the specific 0.5mm airbrush needle is always out of stock for me.
>>96174957>I never bothered with inks but I hear them mentioned now and then although you almost never see them used on yt guides etc, whats their deal? why arent they more common?Because inks are considered pretty old-school, while also being harder to control than Contrasts or washes. They're definitely worth the work in my opinion, I often mix a little white ink in with white paints to make it flow and bring up the color a little. Payne's Grey is good for blacklining mecha and making shadow tones.
>>96181406They're also great for making homemade washes.
But don't be like me and try to deviate from Les' Bursley's recipe by using Ultramatte medium instead of matte medium.
That was a disaster and I finally had to accept I messed up and get regular matte medium.
Here's hoping it works as intended.
Got a airbrush machine. Waiting on the other stuff to arrive. It got put in limbo.
Hopefully I can start adding models in progress here. I want to prime with the thinnest possible primer.
Idk, tried to practice mixing some cute skin tones from scratch. Might delete later.
>>96175940Slap on some nuln oil and it's good to go
Cap-toored for Kay-oss!
I was hoping someone would make a mini for her eventually, and it was one of my favorite companies that finally did.
>>96173681Absolutely would.
>>96176117>redditspacingPeople thinking that spacing was invented on reddit will never cease to amuse me. Truly rent free.
>>96175940huh, I don't remember painting for GW
>>96182170you would have at least washed and drybrushed your models.
>>96181878Her skin looks like the priming went wrong? Did you use a tutorial for the eyes or just winged it?
>>96181917They don't know what reddit spacing actually is because they're reddit tourists. They weren't here before people started reddit spacing so they confuse it with double spacing.
This is reddit spacing, aka how people who didn't lurk before posting formatted their posts.
>>96181917it's the only way to get a carriage return on reddit. people noticed a pattern that those types fucking sucked. at least ellipses-for-linebreak oldfags might have some wisdom to impart
>>96177784o damn that's cool as fuck. How's the quality of the minis?
Little more work on overly-modeled dreadnought.
Sup faggots,
My airbrush turns into a watergun when my compressor gets hot
I know its because of the change of temperature how condensation works, and this shitty apartment is terrible at regulating temperatures.
Im only running a single water catch on the pump, is running one inline that much better?

Suggestions on schemes for the top model?
Bottom pictures are the same model, I painted, but without a helmet. I really didn't like how it turned out (didn't finish the hair).
Looking to do silver armour and the rest some mix of blue, white, silver and gold. I can't work out where to put what where to make it look good.
>>96167010 (OP)It was a pain in the ass to import this paint from the US to Europe and apparently the cap was damaged somehow and the paint partially dried (?)
Give it to me straight /WIP/, is there a way to salvage the paint, dilute it somehow?
Why the fuck is Dork paint so hard to get in Western Europe?
>>96183124>Dork painthttps://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/paints-hobby-and-scenery-by-manufacturer/turbo-dork
yeah, really difficult
>>96181716It's impressive, but lord is it wasted on that shitty prime job. With your painting chops, it's time for you to move to lacquer primer or something. You need that smooth surface to paint on.

>>96183357Seems to be related to Wartable Games, which is around forever, and has decent quality. Both of them have pics of bits on this green sponge material.
>>96180255I know it's a squidmar video but this was when I first got started painting minis around 5 years ago. This video really helped me understand layering paints, especially with skin tones, to simulate depth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49tJMKDDmZU
I pretty much use what he does with the skin here on every part of my model and have just refined it to my style. It obviously works a lot better with highly detailed new sculpts but it works well on old stuff, just harder to find the curves of the muscle since they aren't all sculpted.
This is a model I painted immediately after watching that video, as you can see I still hadn't really learned to thin my paints, that red loincloth is MUCKY. lol
>>96183560>I know it's a squidmar videoI am not one of the butthurts in this thread that don't like his stuff. He's good and I find his tutorial stuff good even if he doesn't do a lot of them any more.
>>96183560The skin looks very nice though
