Well the thing I appreciate is that his betrayal is rooted in his own history. I harp on Ingrid's betrayal being stupid because the source of it is Byleth, whom she's known for a few months. Ashe's betrayal is rooted in his loyalty to Lonato, his adoptive father. Ashe loves Lonato. He joined the academy explicitly because he wanted to be like Lonato. But just like in Houses, Ashe didn't realize that his values and Lonato's values had diverged the second Christophe was executed. Lonato is in this game for revenge against the Church that killed his son for a crime he didn't commit. And he's willing to work with any group that gets him that. But Ashe is still pure. He wants to be a virtuous hero, like the stories he read. If he betrays the Lions to stick with his father, he finds out that he betrayed all of his personal values the hard way and there's no way to turn back now. It's a terrible decision that's still in character because he doesn't harbor any belief that he did the right thing. He's miserable. He hates every day he wakes up to. But he already made his choice
