"vtuber design," disregarding for now how reductive that is, is obviously contemporary anime. It's a massive entertainment industry driven by japanese artists that also do work for anime & video games. Why wouldn't the "vtuber style" be deeply woven into the cultural idea of anime aesthetics in 2023 when Engage released? It all comes from the same artists.
Engage released half a decade after Three Houses and during that time vtuber aesthetics exploded in popularity and anime aesthetics became associated with it. Half a decade is more than enough time for contemporary trends to evolve, especially in the modern age where trends emerge and die at a rapid pace.
