Go to /a/ and see how many OPs have a character that looks aesthetically like Hortensia, Alear, Timerra, or Panette. You won't find many. But there's also the terrible unit/character balance due to: most maps having sizes and or side quest requirements that emphasize you using units with the most tile movement, hit rates, hard mode bonuses and or bad growth rate allocation (I.E. Geese vs Gonzales). Thieves can't promote even though they could in FE5, 20% chance for some certain recruitable characters to just not move at all on their turn. Fire Emblem 4 manages to accurately portray warfare as it is.

Few brutal battles in between long and boring stuff like marching from one place to another as quickly as possible, worrying about supplies and planning ahead to reduce the boredom and prepare for battle.

At least the long stretches are useful for building support pairings.

Most units in PoR are viable even on Maniac mode. Though some units get the short end of the stick like the early Myrms or awkward join times relative to their competition like Ilyana and Brom. Soren's the best mage to train since he's with you for 95% of the game and has a solid unique skill.
