Haha actually Kanji recognition is the easiest part of Japanese for me by far. I’ve done about a year of college Mandarin. Remembering the Kanji, taken at a slow pace with minimal time investment, feels like magic with how straightforward and powerful it is too.

It’s remembering readings that have literally nothing to do with the components of the character that makes me want to bang my head against the wall. In Chinese the phonetics much more regularly line up with characters. But I’m grading myself on remembering the reading. So my two struggles are that kana only words are hard to recall meanings, while kanji cards are super easy to recall meanings but readings remain elusive. I’m optimistic though, I had a couple minutes where I got to write the sample sentences on a couple problem cards out with furigana and I found it helped a lot. I will stay the course. I’m going to do that for my problem cards at least once per card from now on and for new cards at least when I have the time to really sit down and thoroughly study.
