Don't have to go that far; they don't even actually understand how it works on Earth.
Science models reproducible patterns. The models can predict how things move in relation to mass based on repeated observation, but they actually have no idea why do things move in relation to mass in such way, i.e. how "gravity" works, and ultimately what it can or cannot do.
This applies to everything in science. It's ultimately a discipline of divination.
