It's different because of Demon Slave and Masquerade and how all the levels and (some) of the enemies are designed around it, but it's also desperate to make you use DS because it took so much effort so the Magic economy is broken in your favor and every Demon attack scores like a Weave no matter what it is. That said, if you look under the hood Demon Slave has a lot of fun stuff you can do with it and even though the new enemies are kind of boring about half of them are pretty fun to fight still while the boss lineup is actually good outside of the genre-flip victory laps since they can get annoying on replay. I also think the weapon lineup and Rival boss (mechanically, not presentation-wise) are the best in the trilogy even if it doesn't come together very well as a total product. It's a better game than 2 overall but it's also a notably worse first playthrough than 2.
Also play Origins, it's the best Bayonetta since 1.
