You can clearly see that the player got lucky or memorized every spawn. Is memorization a thing in games? Yes, but it's hilarious the tactics players have to take, such as carefully despawning enemy waves and praying they don't get a bad RNG. Since NG spawns after NG1 have a lot of RNG because of the broken spawn system. NG1 has the best balance of difficulty and combat design of these games, the only bad chapters are the sixth generation puzzle chapter. Zarkhan and the other aquatic stage are painful. Apart from that it's a 9/10 game

Outside of a few moves, I find that there's little reason to use weapons other than Rebellion. They're all too slow, in my opinion. Same applies to guns. >>714684227Well my main gripe with OTs is how instantly accessible the instakill option is and how it oveshadows other aspects of the combat. The way it is now you not only lose the heavy strings themselves but also reasons to use others to kill the enemy (either by severing another limb or just depleting their HP) or just put them into some hitstate. Another thing is that most enemies still remain a threat after losing a limb, some even gain unique behaviors but the OT is right here to neuter them. SoB does alleviate the issue for the most part but I also just wanna use my regular attacks to finish them off. In that regard I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Lunar's heavies and holds don't have SoB property. I never really cared about the on-demand iframes from OTs all that much so to me the change would do a lot of good.

>>714692006Obviously haven't read all of it but skipping to random parts and reading bits and he's overexplaining extremely basic concepts that most people will have figured out without having to go out of there way to explain or compare it to some other seperate genre. It's also extremely broad, some of the stuff i've read applies well enough to specific action games but not to others. Most of these action games emphasize certain skills or abilities much more than others, even within their own series, broad strokes aren't really helpful.
Someone who isn't interested in action games is never going to read this and people who already like action games will have already figured out and understood everything here. If he wanted to drop interesting, relevant knowledge it would've been more worth it to cover individual games.
ive been thinking of trying out the NG series. I remember trying out Sigma on my Vita but i wonder about the rest.
Do these games emulate well on PC? Are there any shit ports to avoid?
>>714692182>it's just a semantics thingNo it's not. You not understand what a branch office is is not a semantics thing. That company is no more Japanese than Zainichi gooks born in Osaka.
>>714692608Grab the MC and start playing. You'll do great with that.
>>714692608I emulated Sigma 1 years ago and it was fine, but the recent trilogy collection on PC is also fine

>>714692608the second game is the only one that MUST be emulated
>>714692887what about this tho
https://www.nexusmods.com/ninjagaidenmastercollection/mods/37
>>714692965No native pc port, any remake tones down enemy density and censors gameplay. The new black 2 game is built on this censored gimped remake and og is left in the dust
>>714692608You can emulate ng2 via xenia. It's fully playable with few issues (audio gets cut out randomly). You can also play the hd collection, but if you do make sure you apply the black mod to sigma 2, because the way sigma 2 removes all the blood and limbs flying around compared to the original 360 version makes the game less fun to play.
>>714692965ports of ng2 are extremely different to its original vision, pretty much everyone agrees later remasters/ports are downgrades
mostly because combat encounters are reworked to have less enemies while making them much meatier, the gore is also gone in sigma versions
>>714693054This and nm mod are probably the best way to play sigma 2 but emulation is still the best way to experience 2 outside of playing on xbawx
Just beat Stellar Blade. Solid $30 game, great enemy designs. 10/10 music holy shit.
Combat is better than the other parry-centric games I played but there really isn't much player expression and a lot of it is fluff.
>>714692965NTA but the Sigma 2 and Black 2 play differently to the OG. OG is a lot faster, including how fast enemies die and how fast they are.

>>714693254don't forget to mention the fact that emulation is CPU heavy for NG2 on xenia

Nevertheless, still gonna try it out.
>lessens delimb rates by a lot
>enemies have more health and deal more damage
>This results in deadly enemies that you can spend more time fighting as opposed to having a giant crowd of paper thin enemies that are just begging to be UT'd
I forgot what video I watched but I remember a guy crying that incendiary ninja's have too much health and how a full UT couldn't kill one on master ninja it's literally
>NOOOOOOOOOO MY PRESS Y TO AWESOME BUTTON DOESN'T GIVE ME A FREE KILL!!!!!!!!!!
Also, the weapons in NG2 are actually fun but in the base version most enemies die so quickly that you dont even use half of a weapons moveset because there's no point. Sigma at least gives you a chance to put some of those strings or cool combos to use.
Also sigma completely cuts out some of the terrible boss fights in the base game, it adds 2 which aren't amazing but they're not horrid dogshit like the armadillo's or w/e.
Don't care what anyone says. Sigma 2 is the more fun version to play. People who defend OG 2 literally just want to spam UTs against a crowd of an enemy, pretending that they're better than musou players

>>714694784>People who defend OG 2 literally just want to spam UTsReally funny thing to say when spamming UTs is the most reliable way to fight certain enemies like the IS ninjas in Sigma 2 because they're just incredibly unfun to fight normally.

>>714693521what's the difference between this and the old version?

>>714694784>lessen delimb rates by a lotAlready shit. The whole point of delimbing is to facilitate quick kills. If ttk is high it has no reason to exist. Either make the delimb rates high or get rid of it completely.
>>714695547They're not hard, they're very uninteresting to fight in small groups because that's not how they're designed. A single ninja is a joke on its own no matter the version.

>>714695542you dont need cheat engine for the new version + various tweaks and bugfixes along the way, its more finished iirc
honestly shocking how MH is the last game with good bossfights
>>714690345How accessible that instakill can be comes down less to the OT itself and more to how easily delimbed the enemies are, which isn't an issue in 3RE. All of that really is largely solved by SoB existing without negating the use from OT iframes which are useful. Heavy strings not being prioritized is unfortunate but they're not particularly necessary on delimbed enemies as it is and you can still use them on anyone else with mere positioning, which is what SoB also emphasizes. I'd rather have on-demand iframes than one string in specific instances as everything else works on them, but I imagine there's probably still an input method that would work anyway.
>>714671806>>714673083You're playing the game wrong faggots, lunar is exclusively for homosexuals that don't actually want to play the game. No wonder you can't have fun, you joyless faggots go out of your way to deprive yourself from any entertainment.

Just did Day 1 of NG3RE for the first time. I suppose it feels good enough but some of the changes are a little odd (healing and ninpo in particular) and the many setpieces/stealth moments date it so badly as a 7th gen game. I kept thinking about how similarly structured it is to the first stage of Revengeance (urban setting attacked, exploding trucks, QTE moments, mostly just normal soldiers and a couple big vehicles including one you break down the armor on the legs so you can sever them, rival introduction, cinematic limping segment). I know it came out first but it's still uncanny. Also the britbong in the mask kind of sucks in every way from design to voice to personality to boss fight; I hope he's less lame later on.
>>714699754Regent is one of the few good things about the game.
>>714700104His first fight felt really basic, almost like a prototype for the bosses they'd start doing in Nioh and its descendants but not even as varied or interesting as most of those. Ultimately you just roll the grab or the third hit of his string or his UT and then get in about 15-20% of his life.
Many youtubers agree that DMC4 was the peak of the series because it had by far the most gameplay depth and tech. Are they right?
>>714701314brother is this your first time playing ninja gaiden? Because a lot of the bosses in NG1 and NG2 are the same basic dodge and punish style of gameplay.
>>714701557By combo depth and tech they mean autism like inertia which all it really does is let you move slightly back and forth during hits and stuff like guard flying. It's all fluff tech that is purely there to make it seem like more interesting stuff is going on when in reality it's pointless movement that exists to fill the ego of a specific group of autists.
They added this shit back into DMC5 anyways so it doesn't matter.
>>714701681Something about him felt off compared to Doku or Mirai or Genshin, but maybe I'm being too harsh on the first real boss. It's also been a while since I've played Black in all fairness, only played 2 this year before this.

>>714694784NG2 design makes a lot of sense to me. What doesn't make sense is when you keep hitting an enemy for a minute straight with a sharp weapon, and your cuts don't do jack shit most of the time. The idea behind ng2 is that weapons need to be deadly to be really satisfying. Also you can treat multiple enemies with low hp as one enemy with lots of hp. Too bad the balance is off. You don't need more hp on the enemies, you can just make them harder to open up and this alone would improve ng2 a lot.
>>714696652The reason is that most of the time longer combos will be interrupted, and they are usually not worth the risk, when you have shorter options with higher delimb rate. This was also solved in Samurai Jack battle through time: longer strings should have armor on them.
bmups are goated and so is nioh.
>>714687942>action games have yet to top this>posts an action game
>>714704373A 30+ year old one with more interesting enemy design than most modern action games.
>>714697041I'd say mitigated rather than solved, OTing a claw ninja is definitely more satisfying compared to vanilla 2 because it takes more effort to get to that point, but a fair bit of enemies get delimbed very quick and while SoB gives you reason to not OT them, most of your moveset still remains on backburner. Varying things up with GT and izuna helps and you already suggested to turn the latter into an OT (I am curious about its implementation, would it still be a normal air string just without an ID at the end against healthy enemies?), but wouldn't removing OTs from regular Y also open up more of your moveset and give it more purpose, white still having the option to OT in other ways? The on-demand iframes are cool for sure but how often do you OT specifically for that purpose and how bad is it needed to begin with when there's plenty of strong defensive options as is?
>>714703378ackshually in NG, any of the games, some strings have built-in invincibility it's just not obvious
>>714704524You could say that about anything at any time. X 30 years ago is more interesting than most modern x now (with now being said during any year).
Whoever decided to give ninja gaiden 3 razors edge enemies so much health, not having the izuna drop as part of the default sword moveset should be izuna dropped out of mount everest

>>714705127>should be izuna dropped out of mount fujiftfy
>>714705048It's been awhile so I dont remember the inputs for all of them but I know 3 has a lot especially the heavy string enders
>>714705696I'm well aware that holding block at the end of your strings is good practice in ng as it puts you into blocking while the last hit's animations is still playing, but I'm talking about armor in the middle of the string, which is the whole point as it makes long strings safer to use.
>>714706019nta but you mean hyper armor?
>>714706019yeah and i'm talking about INVINCIBILITY nigger which is a big part of NG offense
Playing as Haggar makes me wish that grapplers (and honestly grabs in general) were more of a thing in modern action games. It's weird how this entire archetype basically doesn't exist there. It's why I'll always love Grimlock in Devastation.

>>714706423They were almost on the right track with Nero in DMC4 but too bad his grabs are enemy specific, you can still use them for different uses but I would've liked it if you could somehow do 1 or 2 "universal" grabs
>>714703068>make them harder to open upGo play 3 RE

Can we keep this up until NG4?
>>714707000Yeah, I think Nero's cool too, but he really leaves a lot to be desired in that department. I really want Capcom to do a solo Nero game so they could properly expand upon him (and especially his grabs), but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon.
Dragons Dogma has cool grab mechanics. 2 adding the ability to pin smaller enemies down was one my favorite new additions. Nothing quite like jumping on a goblin then planting a bomb directly on them.
>>714706423As action games moved away from multiple characters, the big body grappler playstyle was the first to go since it was the furthest from the others and only really there in most 90s beat-em-ups as a "well Final Fight has Haggar so we need one" move whether they understood why it was good or not. Also grabs are very strong and hard to balance around if you don't always have access to them; in Final Fight or Streets of Rage every character has throws and the big guys just have stronger ones or some greater mobility during grabs, while if a game that doesn't give every weapon/character grabs by default has a grappler they need to balance around it. Grimlock is awesome but some enemies and bosses can be absolutely dumpstered by his Counter Attack grabs once the herd is thinned a little; the entire first half of the Blitzwing fight can even be looped this way.

>>714709775>grabs are very strong and hard to balance aroundGood point. You really need to know how to balance them otherwise they'll just break the game completely. That's probably the reason why most action game devs don't bother with them at all.
>the entire first half of the Blitzwing fight can even be looped this way.Doing that for the first time was honestly pretty funny to me, but it does really prove that Grimlock is not exactly well-balanced himself. >>714706423Grappling is one of those things that made classic GoW combat very fun
Ramming through enemies by using one of them, using them as projectiles, and executing a perfect air grab loop or evading an attack through the animation is always very satisfying.
Its something i havent really seen in any other action game do since, especially new GoWs. Maybe DMC4 with the devil bringer but even there it's not as in-depth with the stuff you can do with it and you tend to forget you even have it halfway through the game.
>>714713513GoW3 ramming was extremely powerful, literally did more damage than most stuff and iirc ur invincible during it
So, what is action in action games, really? We use the word like itโs some simple thing, but have you ever really thought about it? Is "action" just button-mashing or is it something far more... abstract? Like, pressing a button to attack, sure, that's action, but is it, though? What happens between you, the controller, and the screen? Is the โactionโ the movement of your character, or is it a metaphysical dance between the digital and the physical worlds? Whoโs to say? Think about it: youโre slashing through enemies in a hack-and-slash, but is the real action in the attack itself, or in the split second of anticipation before your character swings? That moment before the swing, thatโs where the action truly lives. Itโs not about pressing X to perform a move, itโs about what happens in that space between you and the action. And donโt even get me started on combos. Combos arenโt just button sequences, theyโre an expression of inner chaos, a reflection of the harmony between man and machine. The action isnโt in the sequence itself, itโs in the flow, the connection you make to the gameโs soul. The game becomes you, and you become the game.So what does all this mean? โActionโ in character action games isnโt just about what you do, itโs about who you are in that moment. When you press that button, are you pressing it, or is the game pressing you?TL;DR: Action isnโt a thing you do; itโs an idea you live. Itโs a mental state disguised as gameplay.
>>714714686Yeah but not everything was rammable. For some it was just an animation or an instakill, so you couldnt really rely on it that much.
I dont think it was really THAT powerful either, because realistically you only ever could use it in crowded mookrooms with stuff like hoplites, which aren't that durable themselves.
>>714699754Update: Day 2 was a good bit better EXCEPT for all the "hey we gave you the bow so use it the whole stage to deal with these guys you can't reach" and the boss just sucked. Ayane Day 2 was really fun until I got to the Jace triplets and now I'm in hell. I think it's just a skill issue combined with me not having a ninpo ready but I can't discern their tells or who's open for attack because of the way the game tries to track things.
>>714715354throwing projectile guys you kill with one bow shot is coming throughout most of the game

>>714715354Unlock your camera. Use hold extensions at the end of your combo strings that end with heavy attacks. I think they have hyperarmor on some of their melee attacks which you just block or counter with light attacks but for all other stuff they do you can just dash into them to interrupt.
So, I was really looking forward to this game. I love astronomy, so I figured it would be right up my alley. When I put the game in, the patch required was 21GB. Even though it took me about a month to download (I live in the boonies where the fastest internet is not much better than dialup) I was willing to wait, because after all, it's a game about space stuff, which I love.
The patch finally finished downloading, I fired the game up, and went into the tutorial missions, which seemed like a good idea since I was a new player, and this might be a somewhat complex game if it's really a space sim. The first tutorial was about basic flight stuff, very easy. Then I went into the second tutorial (landing inside a space station) and...that's it. I was never able to land. As instructed, I put down my landing gear, I aligned my ship so that it was facing away from the entrance, I took the ship down onto the center of the landing pad and BOING! I bounced right off. That's weird. Maybe I missed doing something in the left console? No, there's nothing else in there. Is my landing gear down? Yes. Am I aligned the right way? Yes. Am I at the right landing pad? Yeah, it's pretty hard to miss with the big orange box around it. Bounce, bounce, bounce. I kept looking around for something that I was missing, but the objectives were very clear and simple. I just couldn't land no matter what I did. I shut the game off after about 20 minutes of trying. I value my time, and there are a lot of other games that I could be having fun with instead of getting frustrated.
Here's a free tip for any of you present or future game developers: If players are getting stuck in your tutorial, you're absolutely terrible at your job. I am not someone who needs much hand-holding in video games. I generally figure things out very quickly, often skipping the tutorial and just diving right in.

You start out understanding a mechanical concept and your head runs with the potential but when the game doesn't reach the potential you conjured up in your head, you're disappointed. Sometimes that is justifiable, most of the time it isn't.
What you want doesn't exist and likely never will and there's a good chance that the theoretics of what you want wouldn't be good anyways.

>>714667604To be fair, every action game has just been aping DMC and GOW as badly as possible. There's no modern ones that are truly their own identity, thus worth talking about.
Whatever happened to Faust webm schizo?
Say hello to Masami Ueda, the man responsible for DMC1, Viewtiful Joe, and Bayo 1+2's OSTs.
I was looking into this because while DMC3 obviously has some great tracks, I was wondering why DMC1 specifically had such a constantly great and creative OST and now I know why, the main guy behind it stuck with Kamiya and worked on his games while 3 was made.
Seriously what a beast, even if you don't like Bayonetta you have to admit it has a really unique, creative OST.
>>714714915action game = combat system game usually focused on controlling one character at a time. Combat system is the focus here, but I understand that combat systems can exist in different genres, hence the clarification. Also "usually" is included because you might have puppet controlling characters.

>>714713513I've really wanted a game that revolves around grabs with a character similar to Ban as its MC.
>>714717782It really depends on how long it is and how much movement/action there is. If your clip doesn't have much going on, they can be pretty long-ish (for a 4MB webm anyway) and you can use higher resolutions. If your webm has a ton of shit going on, you have to lower the resolution and make sure they aren't that long, otherwise they'll just look like shit. Also, make sure to use VP9.
>>714716267Because video games are a waste of time ultimately, and now you can see this simple fact. Your mind is telling you to move on, but old habits die hard.

>>714715354Whenever you find enemies blocking or evading, it's solved by the heavy attacks. Few monsters will block your heavy attacks - even better, after a couple of blocked hits they will always go for a grab allowing you to punish them with sob.
>>714718802Why is Bayo 2's soundtrack so much weaker than 1's then
I think they made NG2 way too ballbusting. The choice between running around an arena fishing for delimbs and sequentially killing one enemy type at a time OR getting gangbanged by off-screen projectiles interrupting your combos is not a fun one. The encounter design in NGB felt much better curated.
I see that they kind of wanted to remedy this in NG2S but the level design of 2 isn't interesting without the huge enemy numbers.
>>714716221>>714716268These helped but I still had to redo the prior fight to have ninpo ready before I got to them, I needed the heal. Only took my second try after that though.
>>714717782I just use webm for lazys. Usually I set the res to 900x506 or 854x480 and CRF to 40-45. Depends on the clip duration.
>>714718802The nightmare theme gives me PTSD and I ended up muting Bayo really quick, what a weird idea to remix Evangelion's ending theme and have it be played constantly through the combat. Ear bleeding experience.

>>714719386I spoke too soon before looking into bayo 2 specificially but it seems he wasn't as much of a contributor, a lot of the tracks he's credited for are recycled or remixed from Bayo 1, tho he still made a few original tracks. I agree tho, Bayo 2's OST is much weaker and then 3's has like 2 good tracks total.

>>714720190This guy has dame da ne clussy fever!
Razor's Edge has one good weapon and it's the sword. Everything else is boring or unfun to use. The dual swords had to have been made as a joke with how bad they are. And not bringing back the flails which have been there since NG04 is a sin.

>>714720372They wanted to let you know it's a theme for the fans. They hate you for liking Dante.
>>714719896Nioh dumps 5-8 pieces of gear on you every few minutes and they're almost all minor changes but you need to adjust your set 1-2 times per stage so you're not walled by enemies, and then on NG+ and beyond you can spend hours buildcrafting if you want something actually substantive out of it. Stranger of Paradise has the best-in-slot button which is nice but that doesn't allow you to build for Affinity or certain skills attached to loot, and the post-game optimization is ridiculously granular and pretty grindy.
Devastation drops weapons only, drops them <50% as often as Nioh does, doesn't really require you to swap out what you have until you find something that's a strict upgrade to what you already have since you're generally fine with whatever weapon you get early on in a given difficulty for a good ways into the campaign. Buildcrafting is possible from the get-go with feeding weapons to each other and TECH slots, but optimization is never needed. Once you have an S (or SS if you have one) of every melee weapon type you can basically ignore the system if you don't care about that at all, and you'll likely be there halfway through the campaign on Magnus difficulty or so; granted stacking passives might be a good way to handle some of the absolute hardest Challenges on Prime.
>>714720323It's okay, don't really have any opinion on it. It reminded me of a gacha game in a bad way, just a bit too sterile and generic.
>>714720318kusarigama is almost literally the same thing as flails but with some more moves.....

>>714720631>but you need to adjust your set 1-2 times per stage so you're not walled by enemiesNo you don't, what game are you playing?
>>714720485It's just Action Games. The differences between your standard 3D action game and what people call Character Action/Stylish Action/whatever is mostly just a quality gap or purely vibes. There are SOME subdivisions you can make like ARPGs or Musous but the lines people try to draw have no strong basis.

>>714720718I put the most time into SoP so maybe the levelgating seeped into my memories of Nioh, but I do recall having to swap out my gear semi-regularly.
>>714720909SoP had the average gear level thing so I understand that because it gave you a harsh penalty if the average wasn't within mission level but Nioh never had this issue.
>>714720867Yeah, you need to upgrade your stuff every so often but it's typically not multiple times within the same mission in Nioh. You might equip a stronger weapon or something towards the end of a mission if you went in with weak gear but it was never obnoxiously frequent or anything.

Performance is disgustingly bad but that's because they were ambitious. Yes the Kaiju mechanics are best out there and are unironically too demanding for many players and the console.

>>714723475It's different because of Demon Slave and Masquerade and how all the levels and (some) of the enemies are designed around it, but it's also desperate to make you use DS because it took so much effort so the Magic economy is broken in your favor and every Demon attack scores like a Weave no matter what it is. That said, if you look under the hood Demon Slave has a lot of fun stuff you can do with it and even though the new enemies are kind of boring about half of them are pretty fun to fight still while the boss lineup is actually good outside of the genre-flip victory laps since they can get annoying on replay. I also think the weapon lineup and Rival boss (mechanically, not presentation-wise) are the best in the trilogy even if it doesn't come together very well as a total product. It's a better game than 2 overall but it's also a notably worse first playthrough than 2.
Also play Origins, it's the best Bayonetta since 1.

>>714726402I just can't derive any joy from them, I tried. Maximum Carnage on Megadrive was one of the first games I mastered to completion btw, it's just that after tasting 3d action games I can't go back to beat em ups. It's not even the 2d visuals and levels that scroll from left to right, like I said already I just don't enjoy the fundamental formula of walking out of attacks and walking back in to counter. If these games included various defensive options I'm sure I'd enjoy them way more.
>>714667604>guys lets jerk off the same four 2-decade-old games>dismissing any new entry of the genreIt's almost like the genre peaked in the 2000s and nothing noteworthy has come out after the decade ended
>>714727825I understand that few people will enjoy the fundamental design of 3d ng bosses: overpowered moves that have to be avoided with few exceptions that can actually be punished - sometimes unreliably. This doesn't make them broken or unfinished though. This is very much the intended design.

>>714731521>you can only win by cheesing themThat's a huge overstatement, most of them can be punished reliably, you just have to find out which of their strings you can punish. Some are hard countered by a specific weapon or strategy, like the water dragon for example that falls apart as soon as you leave the platform and attack him while running on water. The only exception that comes to mind is Elizabeth, but she's similar to Alma who will also evade your flying swallow randomly.
