the truth is donny couldve roped in his room or shot himself with gun, since the perspective of the film is told from him pov, everything after his death is fictional in a sense, its how he imagined himself dying essentially.

the water might have proven to him the strings arent so simple and hes merely following a QTE, butterflies events, necessary for npcs.
