Just watched Donnie Darko and this part of the Philosophy of Time Travel caught my attention, in Stargate SG1 the portals they use are water based and in Donnie Darko it is said that water and metal are the key elements of time travel, the movie also shows these liquid spears that essentially show a person's path, like the path nodes of an NPC from a videogame.

Is the universe deterministic and everyone has their own path node? And how do these water portals work?

i dont think theres any rl corrolations, its metal and water cuz of the book and the plane, npc donny loved fire and water, he saw the puppet strings (water portals) and followed the strings, because he saw being an npc as his fate.
the truth is donny couldve roped in his room or shot himself with gun, since the perspective of the film is told from him pov, everything after his death is fictional in a sense, its how he imagined himself dying essentially.
npc donny shouldve just ignored the water

time travel obviously wouldnt be a factor irl, but:
