As someone who has played gacha, custom/self-insert characters suck ass if there's any sort of story involved. They just end up as this passive cumsock that sits by doing protagonist things while a woman who is heavily implied but never confirmed to be the main love interest explains what's happening. With a set protagonist they're allowed to exist and say or do things that actually matter.
