If the soul is exists now and then, I assume inbetween it's just "dead". As in the material is still there but not functionnal.
If the question is "what's in it for us now?", then I think it's perfectly possible that the existence of this being is contingent on us working towards it. (aka, working towards a future that is constructive rather than destructive). Picture the final judgement like a sort of roko's basilisk.
