Part 2
The 2009-2015 era was probably the peak of prequel hate where nobody even really defended them anymore and to do so got you heavily mocked, even in the most diehard of SW fandoms. It thrived especially on reddit and in comment sections on youtube/imdb (before it died) and the media establishment that had been so upset by TPM/AOTC in the early 2000s latched back onto it in a form of nostalgic hate. By this point, the EU had also been developing their own mythology and while it had a small but dedicated reader base, stuff that got leaked from it into the general public (like the Yuuzhan Vong or Han Solo’s kid turning evil or overly-developing the backstories of various irrelevant OT characters). Feloni’s 2008 Clone Wars series ultimately proved irrelevant at pushing the narrative one way or the other, it was met with a lot of disdain in the remaining SW fandom for retconning so much and introducing Ahsoka and disinterest in the general public for being a TV cartoon.
Into this came Disney, and their purchase and retconning of the EU and anti-prequel mindset (driven by aforementioned media elites who had by this point been heavily inspired by the RLM videos) indeed served to reinvigorate Star Wars by announcing a new trilogy. JJ Abrams himself pretty much used the RLM videos point by point when crafting TFA, and then combining it into the script of Episode 4. TFA was well-received by the public despite tons of flaws, bad casting, and simply recycling A New Hope. Even the majority of fans save the most diehard (often EU refugees) were happy with it. If you criticized it at the time, you were met with claims that Star Wars needed a reset because the prequels had been so bad and if you don’t believe me here’s a link to the RLM review vids I’ll just leave those there. Such was its popularity that it was the highest grossing Star Wars film since the original 1977 film and the 10th highest grossing film of all time, EVEN WHEN adjusted for inflation.
