IIRC drum frames are a pretty interesting story because adding them wasn't Fujioka's idea at all, it had something to do a request from the publisher (Dengeki) and compatibility for possible model kits. But he went above and beyond to ground the mechanism and tie to to a shit ton of different things, making it feel like a real part of the setting rather than a model kit contrivance.
