Kira as a character died the moment Aegis exploded in his face. The corpse was repurposed for a wish fulfilment power fantasy mary sue moralfag self insert for Fukuda.
In Destiny they at first wanted to dig up the rotting corpse one last time and use it properly this time around - as a Sacrificial Lion and Passing the Torch. But they got cold feet the moment Impulse shoved his sword in his face. The stinky bloated corpse was then re-repurposed for even more schizophrenic mary sue wank that could only be excused as a brain cancer dying wish.
And in the movie they inadvertently became semi-conscious of this and parodied the character with a hilariously retarded melodramatic otome NTR plot point which culminates in him crashing out, getting mauled by Athrun and then totaling both Freedoms in the movie. Which was the most appropriate thing they could've done, second only to finally putting him down.
tl;dr don't think about these characters too much. They're not written as humanlike characters. They're entertaining clowns. Same goes for action scenes and world building consistency in CE.
