Oh I know old cars were not designed with safety in mind, they had no real knowledge of stuff like crumple zones until enough people got mangled. VW beetles also had a habit of impaling people with their steering columns when the firewall got pushed into them.
Cars moved slower back in the day and there were fewer of them so accidents weren't as prevalent. Plus most people learned to drive on a manual transmission which basically forces you to become a better driver by leaving a decent gap between cars, monitoring your speed, stopping distance, etc.
Cars have needed to get safer because people have become shittier drivers. All the (((tech))) is only making it worse too.
