I'm not sure what you mean by the sequel trilogy. Raymond E. Feist appears to have written a lot of books in this world. I was going to follow up with Silverthorn. Since it's apparently a direct sequel to what I just finished reading. And it's one of his earliest published works. I don't want to jump around too much. I prefer going in publication order. Unless a latter work is independent of the former work. I don't know anything about Silverthorn. I'm just going to go in on faith that it's at least about as good as the previous book. Though I'm hoping it's better.
But do you know what's funny? I actually avoided reading the Magician series because the title sounded super generic. I've seen it get mentioned a few times in these threads, and just passed on it. But then I was browsing goodreads for recommendations, when I saw "Daughter of the Empire". That looked interesting. Then I noticed it was labelled as the 5th book in the Riftwar Cycle. So I figured I should start at Riftwar Cycle 1. Which happened to be Magician: Apprentice. I took that as a sign to give Magician a chance.
Oh yeah, I just remember something else I wanted to say about Magician. That the story has a very similar vibe to A Shadow in Summer. Or The Long Prince Quartet, as the series is called. It was similar in the way it told the tale between two main boys who had a childhood friendship. And how their lives evolve into two different ways. And all the political intrigue that occurs. And how it depicts conflicts as very inglorious. However, I think The Long Prince Quartet has more weight to it. Even though I was annoyed by the lack of magic in that book too, it made up the difference with thicker character drama.
