Agreed, splitting them up into types to unlock so you're constantly remembering to go back to old places and unlocking new moves made them great. only improvement I can think of is making the team formations into real moves that can be used wherever. Puzzle pieces were less charming but similar in requiring you to unlock moves, but the lucky emblems might as well just ask you to press triangle or open a chest.
But to be fair the rest of the series isn't interested in little quests like KH1 in general. I think the problem is that battle options are cluttered and movement too op at this point. sora showing growth is good, just wish shit like flowmotion and airstep were unlocked in the late game so there'd be room for things like this.
