Gameplay in 1 is fine after the QoL improvements of later ports. I actually liked how some character strengths could also backfire and you could actively fuck yourself up if you are not careful. Like how you can't heal your high level ninja with a low level mook because his innate evade works on friendly items/healing as well, or that the item world sometimes just gives you picrel and if you don't have a gency or you are too underleveled, you are fucked.
