the knight is dess after being mutated by the dark for years, she can exist in the light world but at a weakened state and only for so long (still strong enough to lift undyne, probably because it was night time)
the mayor knows this and is working with kris to fix her
kris was partially responsible for dess' state during the incident alluded to in the egg room that made him go to therapy
it's possible kris lost his original soul or gave it to dess to keep her alive, then "summoned a demon" (aka us) to replace his old soul (until gaster put us in control in ch 1, or maybe that was the person interrupting there)
asgore took the fall but toriel might have helped cover up kris' involvement (the toriel variable hiding the black deer in mantle game)
