Overtly "wacky" Japanese games like Neptunia and Gal*Gun made a major portion of their sales in the west, and that was a decade ago. This is not just a western thing either, the tendrils are digging into Japan as well. Tokyo Clanpool, the game I mentioned, also released on the Switch, or perhaps more accurately, it tried. Nintendo not only barred the game from a western release, but even demanded the same censorship as what was preemptively applied to the PC version for the Asian version. At the same time, ports of the Neptunia Re;Birth games were also denied a western release on Switch, and those are decade-old games that have already released in the west before, and are Teen-rated to boot. It speaks to how bad the situation has gotten when even Neptunia struggles with restrictions, let alone something like Gal*Gun or Senran Kagura. Compile Heart's entire pre-2020 catalog is basically verboten nearly everywhere now. And none of them are pornographic, only featuring mild to moderate or slightly strong ecchi in line with what would be permitted in a PG-rated game (albeit definitely pushing the limits in places). Neptunia is one of their tamest series and even it can hardly release uncensored.
