>Meanwhile, hotheaded Rainbow Dash has finally learned to be satisfied with getting silver.
She wasn't characterized as hotheaded this episode and this character arc only works if you judge her based off her previous episode leading up to this where she wants to join the wonderbolts to ditch Bulk Biceps & Fluttershy which many standardful people would agree with the fact she should have ditched Ponyville in favor of Cloudsdale since she originally comes from Cloudsdale anyway and her dream is to join the Wonderbolts and Bulk Biceps isn't even a friend.
>From a writing perspective, this spell and the ice arrows were added to contrive a scenario where only Spike could save the day. Notably, Rainbow and the other pegasi are not helpless and do their best to minimize the damage.
You have some technical judgement skills in you.
>This is why I think this episode serves as an excellent lesson in writing.
Some & technical being the keywords here.
>And the fact that Twilight was the first one to understand how Spike felt this speaks volumes about her own struggles. She is a Princess, but just giving her wings doesn't make her FEEL like a Princess. I find S4 to be very weak overall, particularly on the execution of Twilight's character development, but this scene shows that the show still retained the potential for meaningful character payoffs.
Technically and indeed "potential", if the execution and potential was fulfilled then judging by our own human brain the answer is no to low-mediocre at best.
>all the praise in the world means nothing if you don't feel it inside
Heavy-handed lesson and almost alienating when paired with the context of the episode, the only context being Spike's vanity and insecurity to try to maintain the crystal shmucks/ponies' adulation towards him for no real reason other than his vanity, gluttony and his insecurity which just like Twilight's isn't very well outlined compared to a naturally confident character like Rarity.
