idk if anon will see this but it did make sense to call it the "M5" at the time. Before the release of 2042, the US Army was looking for a replacement for the M4, and the SIG MCX Spear was picked to be its successor. The MCX was then given the designation "XM5".
For further clarification- X means "experimental", while the M means "model". The 5 means it's the 5th in the series of Carbine rifles. What doesn't make sense, is that the MCX isn't a carbine rifle.
Later in 2023, the XM5 was changed to the XM7 to avoid some name that Colt took. Who knows why they skipped 6.
