I have a 7.1 PCI card occupying the sole old school PCI slot on my motherboard. I bought it to drive the 7.1 headphones I used to use as my main ones. It sounds fine. The on-board 5.1 sound card sounds fine too. So does the MOTU audio interface I have hooked over USB 2.0 that drives my DT990 Pros and serves as mic/guitar input.
I used to be an audiophile myself. But then I turned 12 years old. My PCI card is unshielded and sits a few inches away from 8 HDDs constantly spinning and doing there thing. Oh and there is a massive GPU above it along with 4 or 5 other PCIe cards occupying lanes and space in the case. It's pretty much the worse case for a sound card and it sounds fine no matter what I drive with it. I like having multiple line-in and mic ports. It's comfy.
All this shit cost like $120 I think. Most of that the audio interface. The PCI card was like $20. It's a vast improvement over the on-board audio. Which while not totally horrible is a noticeable step down in quality. I would have driven my DT990s with it if it could put out enough power but I got the 250ohm headphones so I was going to need an amp anyway. I've used it to drive studio monitors with another cheap amp I had laying around and guess what. It sounded fine then too.
I need to start selling pro audio hardware. People will lap up any kind of snake oil when it comes to a/v audio. So easy to get the average consumer to pay hundreds of dollars for a $2 piece of trash in a fancy case.
