No, they are annoyingly random, not invisible.
The Watchmen grid is very sequential and monumental. Very clean, like a poster.
A whole comic with this tight grid is probably too much for most storys, but Japanese are the other extreme. Most of the time they are not able to make a 9grid work, where it would work. Sometimes its good to have a monumental, clean layout. But in manga the grid is just random most of the time, often with diagonal borders without any need for it.
