That's a fascinating argument. I think that that's why 1 has picked up so much steam after the release of 5 or, at least, it's one of the reasons. 1 is a smaller, more focused game. It's short and to the point. There are frustrating parts but nothing overstays its welcome because nothing demands too much time.
3 has this issue but it compensates for it with a stellar story. There is a lot of small encounters and a annoying roadblocks. It's a good game but it can go on for too long.

You really find that to be a good thing? If that's the case then 5 is a game for digest, not made for any meaningful experience. DMC 1 and 3, for all their flaws demanded more from their players. You had to work for it. Yeah, 5's mechanics, 5's weapons, 5's movesets, but that's for those elitists who spent 400+ hours learning to jc. You can beat the game without ever doing any of that. Most everyone is not looking for that experience and the game won't hold the attention of the people who didn't spend the years between 4 and 5 learning inertia.

>DMC has probably the worst upgrade system in any action game.
I don't know that I'd go that far. 5 certainly has an explitable system with the hat.
DMC's issues are the exact opposite of what Kamiya seems to want to make out of action games, they are made by people who are afraid of scaring away their audience. Kamiya seems to not give a fuck and makes games wanting to good while the folks making DMCs 4, 5 and DmC all want to get as big an audience as they can by not being hard at anything. They made 4 look like it does because they didn't want the horror to scare women. Nero was made, specifically, to appeal to women. DMC5 is extra accessible, not being hard but having that unbeatable boss just to say that it is, and making every other aspect of the game quick and easy, for lack of a better term, to not frustrate the player. DmC, well, we all know why that happened.
