There's an opportunity cost to letting your game rot.
To use a FF11 specific example there must be thousands, potentially millions of people who got filtered by the playonline launcher which is as evil now as it was 30 years ago. Shit like that kneecaps a game before people even get to try it properly.
There are many other small things they couldve done to improve retention over the years, like basic UI stuff. Or making controller binding more functional.
