It turns out the issue is caused by the event tiles Miro used to create the shadow effect. Each tile of shadow is its individual event and having so many events on the map at the same time caused the lag. To fixed this, I simply created larger shadow sprites and used them to substitute areas of the map with a large amount of shadow. I was about to get rid of about 160 events that way which reduced the lag by a lot.
