They just leaned in way too hard on the Space Marine "gods-on-earth" thing at the expense of the richness of the rest of the setting. I don't even dislike Space Marines as a faction but there's a reason people will contemptuously say "I dunno ask /hhg/" on here whenever someone tries to discuss nu-lore.
