That dam is up high in the mountains and if it didn’t have those emergency breakaway features that dam would’ve failed and killed thousands of people from all that water running down the mountain. It destroyed all the water pipes they had buried over 20ft deep after the last flood in 2004 messed up the water lines and it took out the pipes they had buried as the emergency water lines. Nobody in Asheville had water for over a month and then the water they started sending through the system was non-potable which means you couldn’t drink or cook with it and was over 2 months until anybody had drinkable water from the city water system.
