That's because discard ends up banned when it's good because it's so cancerous. There's a few early cards aimed at countering discard but they were comically weak and don't work against any Duress effect.
It's like manaless dredge which had the worst play pattern imaginable. You open LotV and you win, or you don't and you lose. That's the whole game.
There's some indirect discard protection like Leyline of Sanctity, but those don't work against the type of discard used in EDH.
Discard is genuinely a design mistake and it's honestly a mystery why card games keep trying to replicate it when it has never created a healthy play environment even a single time. Hand disruption cards have been routinely banned or massively errata'd in basically every game that tried them and didn't die entirely from it.
