They should either look realistically grimy and decaying or realistically dead. There's a scene in the Vietnam movie Hamburger Hill where a guy caught in a mortar attack staggers out of the smoke, and it's clear he's mortally wounded even though he's not dead yet. That scene still sticks with me and horror movies should try to capture that kind of disturbing realism
