There wasnt such a thing as "Hinduism" before the British arrived in India. They would group themselves into smaller groups such as Saivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism, Buddhism, Jainism, Gowmaram, Ganapatyam with millions of tribal gods with their own tradition.
So the modern conception of Hinduism as a coherent overarching religion is completely British and not native to India at all
