It's gotten much more mainstream than it used to, for good and bad. I don't buy into the idea that shooting getting mainstream somehow "saved gun rights" since the 2013 gun control bill failed even upon a hill of dead kindergarteners. It wasn't until after 2012 that things started to majorly shift, the AR took over the rifle market, and "tactical" firearms went from being publicly perceived as scary black guns to just being normal guns.
For my attitude towards gun ownership, I no longer would care about a training/education requirement for ownership being passed. I wouldn't vote for it, but I wouldn't care if it became law. There is simply no barrier to entry anymore for getting into shooting and I feel like the general quality of the gun owning population has decreased as a result. It's just too easy for absolute ass clowns to satisfy their caveman "me want gun" desires because all of the information on buying and using one is right in their pocket.
I know there were always shithead gun owners, but I feel like I've seen a rise in complete retards, like they're the same guys who wanted to learn Kung Fu after they watched the Matrix but quit the moment it required actual effort. Now they're back and they can just buy their way in.
