4 feet and more and actually closer to pony sized was more popular all around, yes. You can see from the stock sfm/gmod height and even drawings back then guessing their height.
They mostly shrunk like half to a full feet to hip-to-belly height in average nowadays, which would leave humans still not house sized, which would be the implication of ponies being that minuscule, so that's fine by me.
Some artists do make them cats, others even horsey, for either side I'm sure there's fags that appreciate it though.
