i should have phrased it better... yes, measuring and placing things correctly *is* important, but only for the large features. composition, proportion etc.

it is copying of details that is mostly useless. with experience you will be *able* to copy even smallest details easily and realize how much less important that is
you are already very good at accurately copying - the fact that it takes you a lot of effort still does not negate that fact.

take a look at this video. ignore the content (color, light, painting) since that is not your concern at the moment, but look at how he moves his brush. he does not care how the bristles fold and move for each brush stroke, he does not even attempt to copy details precisely, but the overall placement of shapes is important. and that extends to other parts of art too: for example he pays great attention to the relations between colors (warm vs cool, bright vs dark) but when he actually *mixes* his colors he does not care to match them perfectly (in fact he happily distorts and exaggerates!)
same thing, accuracy in details is less important, but accuracy in the underlying fundamental "stuff" is very important.

this wrench you sketched shows it too: your ability to accurately copy the small stuff is already quite good, it is - as you accurately noticed yourself - the underlying structure, perspective, orientation, that demands more attention. (not trying to give you critique, you seem to be on a very good path of learning on your own already, your sketch just happens to show these points)

>I think that the things I want to draw are far, far, far beyond my reach atm, I'm happy to practice mundane fundamentals
if you are having fun doing exercises, in that case keep going <3
