My biggest issue was that you couldn't preserve old characters, so the mechanic taken from X-com was missing and it couldn't serve as a crutch to fight really difficult bosses like the Chapter 3 eyeball boss. Only way to have your characters return to a new run is to defeat the Mountain boss, but the Mountain bosses are difficult enough to usually kill at least 1 of your party members and require very specific playstyles and classes so theres no fucking point.

In first Darkest Dungeon improving your characters with safe runs was the whole point. Max level max gear character was very strong but you were also nervous as fuck about losing him. DD2 didn't have the same the same carrot and stick approach going on, it was all just pure rng. Other problem is that Route bosses are all cool but theres no incentive to ever actually fight them if you're not doing a Mountain run because their rewards are shit and they're dangerous enough to potentially kill your party and fuck the run. Even if they kill just one of your Party members, then you're still fucked because you have to fight Exemplar at the end of the Route if you wish to save your Candles.

Oh your routes didn't have enough encounters and too many Loathings? Well the boss is fucked, the entire run is fucked, your characters are fucked, try again. Nobody is going to fight an empowered version of the stupid giant eyeball. Oh one of your heroes died prematurely because all the Empowered Tangle skeleton soldiers decided to all hit him and him only in first turn? If you end the run then and there you get bread crumbs amount of Candles and your last 2 hours were completely wasted by bad rng.
