To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Soulsborne series. The lore is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of esoteric storytelling and environmental narrative design, most of the intricacies will go over a typical player's head. There’s also the games’ bleak, existential philosophy, deftly woven into every NPC’s cryptic dialogue and the hauntingly beautiful item descriptions, these draw heavily from existentialist literature and cosmic horror, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depth of the series, to realize that it’s not just a game- it’s a profound commentary on the cyclical nature of life, struggle, and despair. As a consequence, people who dislike Dark Souls truly ARE unworthy- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the subtle tragedy of Solaire of Astora’s quest for the sun or the metaphysical implications of the Abyss.
I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated casuals scratching their heads in frustration as they fail to uncover the true story of the Ashen One or comprehend Miyazaki’s genius level design. What fools… how I pity them.
And yes, by the way, I DO have a Dark Souls tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the chosen undead’s eyes only- and even they have to demonstrate that they’ve beaten Ornstein and Smough solo before they’re worthy of a glimpse.
