Everyone always concentrates on Cranky mentioning he's "the original Donkey Kong", but always overlook that he does so in the context of talking about it in a meta sense with full knowledge that he's a video-game character. I don't think that bit of lore was meant to be taken seriously, yet everybody does. Pauline being a kid doesn't change anything.
