Cranky being the original DK only worked in the context of Rare's DKC titles as a meta joke. It caused too many character/continuity issues the moment Nintendo combined the DK and Mario universes after Rare left.

Nintendo has never really acknowledged Cranky as "DK Sr", it has always been 3rd parties such as Namco Bandai's Smash Ultimate or Prima's game guides that bring it up. The Mario movie outright retcons the idea.
