People who live in countries without gendered pronouns or pronoun hysteria think this is the default answer, since "they" is a polite way of referring to someone, in history youd refer to kings and aristocrafts as they if you were a peasant. So a european looks at the "what are your pronouns" box and wonders what the fuck does that even mean and enter "they" as the second one.
