Simply not true. Mechs actually have different levels of armor/speed/slots for their weight. One of the most based things you can do in MW5 Clans is take a Jenner, swap out its oversized engine for the lightest possible engine, and then load up the hardpoints with way stronger weapons and armor than any 35 ton mech has a right to have. I had Jenners with more armor and fire-power than 50 ton mechs.
