Fair but also previous games had very different goals. Case in point Ephraim and Dimitri are both gigachad blue Lords who specialize in Lances who had to flee their homes because of a surprise attack by an Empire to the south. But Ephraim is very specifically presented as being impossibly perfect. His father died and his kingdom is burning but he's still able to wage an assault on Grado with just himself, his 2 drinking buddies, and a necrophiliac. And he STILL nearly won, he had Grado's top general chasing his tail while he crushed fortresses on his own. It's the exact reason why Lyon the big bad felt he had to use the Fire Emblem and got himself possessed by a demon. Lyon didn't believe could ever measure up to half the man Ephraim was in order to save his country.
Dimitri isn't defined by his perfection but his imperfections. He has a lot of noble character traits that have been poisoned by his traumas. So when he's forced to flee him, he falls apart. Starts screaming at ghosts and lashing out at his own allies. He needs help which is what differentiates him from other Lords who can watch their families die and drive on with barely a scar
