Personally the problem I have with salesfag arguments is that sales are just one data point. You don't have to explain why a game is good, just that a lot of people bought it. Yes it COULD mean that a game is legitimately good. But it COULD mean the game just had really good marketing. You need more than just sales to properly convey the quality of a game.

As it pertains to Fire Emblem, I'd consider myself a 3Hfag. But that's only because I like the characters and world. Mechanically, I don't hate it but I could schizorant on the amount of problems I have with the game. And while I put a lot of value on characters and world, it also means I have to share space with dipshits who watched a YouTube video and then considers themselves an expert on the game. Which I dislike. I've beaten every route on maddening at least twice but I have to be roommates with the guy who slept through the game on normal. Meanwhile the guy who puts 0 value in character and world gets nothing out of 3H. But since everyone bought 3H, I can't blame that guy for being frustrated because at the end of the day, sales is but one data point. But it's the only data point publishers look at. So if they found Engage to be more mechanically interesting, then yeah they're going to be concerned about the fate of the series which is now being dictate by those who refuse to engage with it. Here's the fundamental problem with relying on sales as a metric for predicting anything for FE. Its IS we're dealing with, they always do whatever they want in the follow up. Fates was the highest selling game at the time yet 3H and Engage both heavily diverged in different ways when they both under development at the same time instead of just being Fates all over again.

Similar case study, Megaman Battle Network 3 was a very popular game in the series. So when Battle Network 4 released, it did serious numbers. BN4 regularly competes with 1 as the worst entry of the series. So when 5 released, it died in a ditch almost immediately.

Engage had a buff of 3H being successful but that buff didn't last long and the presentation of that game has been discussed to death. I don't think Engage is a bad game. But it did itself no favors and it had no staying power. And saying

Maybe Engage's garish designs don't matter to you. Maybe the cartoon plot doesn't matter. Maybe the lack of worldbuilding doesn't matter. But those things did matter to quite a few people. And I'll own it, myself included. I think I have ~500 hours in Engage. I do like the game. I have nothing to discuss about it with other people. And as much as you might hate it, that word of mouth matters. Maybe not so much with the mechanics of the game but with that one data point that steers the direction of these games

I love the shit out of Engage, but I won't shy away from the fact that some of the shit in it looks bad from a design perspective. Timerra's default outfit is possibly the worst offender. She looks great in almost literally anything else. Some of the generic class outfits are awful, like Hero, and some of the palette schemes for them clash horribly (again Timerra is bad for this), but there's also some really good ones, like the obvious sage, or Halberdier looks really sleek. I think there are a lot of good designs in the characters too. I actually like Hortensia, for one, it suits her personality well.

She's also the manifestation of everything Rhea had been working for because she's incapable of getting over the trauma of her mother's death. She means everything to everyone.

I think the student recruiting bullshit was both annoying and made the narrative worse, and the game would be better if it was cut completely.

Well, a big thing is that Silver Snow was the core of the game's premise and the route most focused on by the IS staff members. In order to recruit a student, your skills had to be at a certain rank and the relevant stat had to be at a certain threshold. So for example recruiting Lysithea requires a B in Faith and 15 in magic. Increasing support levels can reduce these requirements but after chapter 11 opportunities for recruitment vanish and any students you haven't recruited will become enemy generals.

In 3 Hopes recruiting is far tighter. Many students are not keen to leave their country to fight for you. So if there is a possible recruitment, it requires expending resources to isolate and defeat them. However the resources needed to recruit are the same resources used for battle, so recruiting makes the map harder to complete. For example enemies may have access to extra traps that can be used against you.

3H's writing is a really interesting beast to dissect. The plot is contrived and details are by intention inconsistent across routes because the devs knew cynically that it would drive discussion between players of different routes. The contrivances also stick out even harder when you contrast them to the insane and sometimes autistic attention to detail the writers exhibit in other areas. I didn't even know until a year or so ago that support conversations have conditionals in them. Some lines are changed slightly depending on whether the support is activated pre or post-timeskip and others depend on specific supports involving one of the two characters having already been unlocked. It's still an improvement in my book. My complete layman take is that it's important that the hair color change is kept far away from the face. The different eye colors wouldn't look too bad if the contrast was more in line with what you'd see in real life heterochromia cases. Red and blue is just too stark a contrast for that to work I think.

Agree, Engage+ Alear hair makes way more visual sense. The normal gradient just clashes too hard with how saturated the design already is. Everything else is screaming for attention and the hair ends up looking like a last-minute Photoshop overlay. Even if Engage+ leans into the sparkle anime nonsense, at least the colors are balanced and follow the symmetry of the outfit.

With fe7 you fully know that they didn't really spend much time on story and there's a gajillion less lines of dialogue or story. Outside of giving the 3 lords some camaraderie, something that was really missing in fe6 where the only thing anyone can remember from a first playthrough is Roy gossiping a lot with Merlinus.
3H was clearly a lot more ambitious and you can see the threads of where they wanted to hook people using the story. And arguably those hooks worked even if a problem like the stinky mole people starts to disintegrate it from its foundation and cause a lot of "but why?" issues. It's more frustrating because you see those little threads of effort but they also should've known better by that point in the franchise when it comes to the basic things.
