i don't think theres anyway to revamp it
the old 2D combat system, guns (and most melee weapons) were insta kill. that works well in a game intended for you to quickly drop-in and start roleplaying a pre-made character
but theres no roleplay anymore, people don't wanna lose their 20000000 hour unmodded caveman runs
"survival crafting" ruined the game
