Cain isn't a nerd, he's a chad. He's just a chad written to be socially acceptable in the current day irony-poisoned social milieu. Outside of the first story, where he does flee like a total coward and accidentally end up the hero, basically every other story he's a full-on, unironic hero all of the time.
Actually, the worst aspect of the books increasingly becomes the long and often utterly absurd rationalizations he feels forced to provide for why his obviously selfless and heroic actions are actually him being selfish and cowardly.
