It is what it is. It's more like an extension to some of the themes and CSM lore that were introduced in P1, but never elaborated upon, like the Four Horsemen, or Pochita's true nature, or Denji's hero play, all of which only became a thing in the last few chapters of P1.
Denji is the glue that holds it all together as a P1 continuation, otherwise you could just regard it as a spinoff that takes place in the CSM universe, but with an entirely different cast of characters.
