Furinkan notes that:

""So they asked me to leave some chicken for it as an offering." - Chicken (particularly Kentucky Fried Chicken) is considered a traditional Christmas meal in Japan. In the 1970s KFC began their "Kentucky for Christmas" promotion in Japan to try and create a Christmas tradition. The promotion was a huge success and Japanese households soon adopted the concept of getting a "party barrel" (what we call a "bucket" of chicken in the west) to eat with their family on Christmas Eve. The 1981 documentary Colonel Comes to Japan discusses how KFC entered the Japanese market and found success."

Of course, we already have that note from VIZ. That documentary is on youtube, if you're interested.
